According to an official with the bureau, the province initiated a five-month forest-protection drive in August. So far, a total of eight similar cases were reported.

In Shima Village, in the suburbs of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, 6,000 trees were cut down, accounting for one-third of the total in the village's afforested zone.

In Ruyuan County, about 100 mu (about 6.7 hectares) of afforestation area was destroyed to give way to a private mining project.

With booming mining and breeding industries in recent years, disafforestation cases have increased in the province, the official said.
