Intel President Optimistic about E-Commerce Growth in China

The President of Intel Craig Barrett said Monday that Intel will double its investment in Shanghai. Intel has already invested some 200 million U.S. dollars to set up its sole manufacturing plant in China in Shanghai.

Barrett said that government support, increasing competition, rapid growth of computer ownership and popular education about the Internet will greatly accelerate the development of e-commerce in China.

China now has more than 50 million Internet users. The country's trade volume of e-commerce totaled 8.1 million U.S. dollars in 1999, over five times that in 1998. The figure is expected to grow to 42 million U.S. dollars this year.
