Largest Fruit and Vegetable Garden Shaped up in Yantai, China

Yantai, a coastal city of Shandong province, has become the largest base for fruit and vegetable production and processing in China after a couple of years' construction.

In the agricultural field of the city, there are more than 600 joint venture companies engaged in agricultural production with an annual export of fruit and vegetable amounting to 150,000 and 200,000 tons respectively, taking up one fifth of the total volume that China export. These agricultural produces are sold to more than 120 countries and regions in the world. Of the annual gross-total revenue of 1.6 million households of farmers in the city, 56% are from the fruit and vegetable production and processing exports.

Recent years have seen the city carry out vigorously the strategy of developing agriculture by science and technology. Every year, more than 4.4 million yuan are injected for the research and development of new varieties of fruit and vegetables and new technology as from 1996 onwards. The 27 new varieties, which are considered to be the best in the province or even in China, have been brought up. And furthermore, 230 scientific results have been achieved in the fields of biotechnology, new type of irrigation, automatic testing and monitoring, and factory planting and cultivation as well as the new technology for fine processing of agricultural produces.

The city has so far registered 300 pioneering enterprises with an annual sales volume exceeding 10 million-yuan. Another 29 of suchlike enterprises scored a total income of over 100 million yuan and still 2 harvested over 0.5 billion yuan, and one at the top hit a record of over 1 billion yuan. The annual sales volume of these enterprises has reached 3.2 billion yuan and 170 million yuan in foreign exchanges as all the fruit and vegetable produces processed in these enterprises are the goods much sorted for in the international markets.
