Over 10 % of Chinese Urban Residents Using Internet

According to a recent survey released by the "2000 Chinese Market and Media Research", the proportion of Chinese urban residents using the Internet reaches 12.3 percent, 5 percentage points higher than last year. Despite the obvious increase in the number of netizens, it is still much smaller than that of developed countries.

The survey shows that compared with the past, more people surf the Internet at home or in Internet cafes and juveniles are one of the major colonies of visitors to the Internet. In 15 Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, 36.2 percent of the families of juveniles have their own computers, and among such families, 44.1 percent of the high school students use computers as a means of study, 42.8 percent play games on computers, and as high as 12.9 percent of them explore Internet on their personal computers.
