Tibet to Build Artificial Climate System

China is to build an artificial climate system in the Tibet Autonomous Region to help reduce natural disasters.

The program is expected to be completed in 15 years and will cost 180 million yuan (22 million U.S. dollars), according to local government sources.

It will feature a network of monitoring systems, information exchange platforms and hundreds of meteorological rocket launchspots, the sources said.

The program will increase rainfall by 10 to 30 percent and reduce losses caused by hailstones by 85 percent.

Known as "the roof of the world," Tibet has very complicated meteorological conditions with droughts, hailstones, snowstorms and frosts often bringing great damage to agriculture.

Tibet has already established 190 meteorological rocket launch spots in 43 counties.
