China's First Police Dog Competition Held in Nanjing

Competition for Chinese Police Dogs Opens in Nanjing
China held its first police dog contests with some 480 of best dogs gathering at the function Sunday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.

At the first competition of its kind, police dog training schools from around the country selected their best "students", to compete in group calisthenics, anti-smuggling, anti-drug, and hunting skill shows and a hurdle race.

The three-day competition is sponsored by the Ministry of Public Security. The ministry has four affiliated police dog training centers in Nanjing, Nanchang, Shenyang and Kunming cities.

Police dogs are important assistants to their trainers in hunting suspects, security checks, border patrol and detection. In the first eight months of this year, over 1,300 dogs at police stations around the country were sent to 31,300 operations, which directly helped uncover 1,150 cases.

Jiang Chunwang, minister of Public Security, attended the opening ceremony of the competition along with other officials.
