China Keeps Winning Momentum at Sydney Paralympics

Chinese strongwomen shone with their record-breaking powerlifts as China continued its climb in the medal tally at the Paralympic Games on Sunday.

On a day with 54 golds on offer and 13 sports in action, the Chinese added five golds to place second with 14, just two short of the medal tally leader and hosts Australia.

Li Ruifang, 29, showed China's strength in women's powerlifting when she won the 75kg category gold with a lift of 137.5kg, breaking the world record three times on route to the victory.

Her teammate Cao Ping continued the record-breaking tale as she managed a lift of 117.5kg in the first attempt in the +82.5kg category, which came out a new world record. She improved her own world mark with two following lifts of 120kg and 125kg.

Wu Hongping also set a new world record by winning the women's discus throw F46 competition with a throw of 39.35 meters.

But Wu, the current world record holder in shot put and javelin, ,did not feel satisfied with the performance, saying that she did not perform true to her form.

"I did not fulfil my wish, as my target is set beyond at least 40 meters," said Wu.

"I hope to retain the title in the next Paralympics Games,"she added.

The other two golds came from table tennis where China swept the women's team 6-10 and team 4-5 titles to its credit.

Placed at the third to eighth were Spain, France, United States, Britain, Canada and South Korea.
