Albright Kicks off Historic Visit to DPRK
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright landed in
DPRK
on Monday at the start of a historic two-day visit which symbolizes the promise of sudden change on one of the world's last Cold War frontiers.
DPRK vice-foreign minister Kim Gae-gwan met her in a low-key ceremony at Pyongyang airport on a gray cloudy morning as her motorcade glided along largely deserted streets on the half hour journey into the capital.
Albright is the first US cabinet member to visit the country and will be the first to meet DPRK leader Kim Jong-il.
The US delegation does not expect to sign any agreements during the visit but Albright will recommend for or against a visit by President Clinton, who could then seal some deals, a senior U.S. official told reporters.
