Explosions Shake Northern TehranSeveral explosions hit the areas surrounding the Park-e Melat and the Enqelab sports complex in northern Tehran at 2100 local time (0530 GMT) Saturday night.A report by the official IRNA news agency said the detonations occurred as a result of mortar attacks, which caused no loss of lives. No further details are available. Similar blasts launched by Iraq-based armed Iranian opposition the Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO) had hit various parts of Iran. The MKO was outlawed by the Iranian government in 1981 and later fled to neighboring Iraq. Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi paid a historic visit to Baghdad earlier this month, during which the two sides agreed to solve all differences and problems resulting from the 1980-1988 bloody war and pave the way for normalization of ties. The two sides also discussed security issues, including opposition groups in the other country, which have made numerous cross-border attacks in each other's territories. |
