China's Ruhr on Rise

Panxi District in China's Sichuan province is emerging as China's Ruhr industrial zone. Blessed with a sunny climate, moderate temperatures, and most important of all, natural resources, Panxi is one of the most promising areas in the west, said Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China.

Covering 0.7 percent of China's territory, the area boasts 13 percent of the nation's iron resources, 69 percent in vanadium, 93 percent in titanium and 13 percent in hydropower.

Panxi, just like Ruhr, one of world's largest industrial zones dependent on its abundant coal resources, is likely to emerge as an energy base.

Zhou said that Panxi will mainly tap hydropower and develop into a special steel production base.

Panxi contains a modern steel and iron production base and Er'tan hydroelectric station, the largest in Asia.
