Gerontology Forum Concluded in Qingdao
The China 21st Century Gerontology Forum concluded in Qingdao of east China's Shandong province Saturday.
During the four-day forum, over 300 gerontologists exchanged their experience in the study of gerontology and discussed solutions for problems associated with an aging population.
Participants all agreed that both China's real situation and advanced technologies should be taken into account when facing issues of an aging population.
Statistics show that one-fifth of world's elderly population is living in China, the most populous country in the world.
China's elderly population, those aged over sixty, amount to 130 million, over 10 percent of the total population. The annual increase stands at 3.32 percent and senior citizens are expected to reach 280 million in 2025 and 400 million in 2050, making up a quarter of the world's population.
They believed that the rapid advent of an older population will surely bring an enormous impact to the political, economic, cultural and social aspects of Chinese society.
Gerontology research in China dates back only two decades.
