Electricity Sold in Cities to Increase by 80 Percent in Decade

The quantity of electricity sold in urban areas of China will increase by 80 percent in the coming decade due to rapid urbanization.

Wang Binhua, a senior official with the State Electric Power Corp., said that the amount of electricity consumed by municipal governments and by urban residents will double by the year 2010.

The quantity of electricity sold in the country will grow by five to six percent annually for the coming five years, and the quantity of electricity consumed by urban citizens will amount to 20 percent of total consumption in the year 2010 compared with 12.2 percent at present, he said.

As China's electricity -generating capacity is still low, China started a three-year plan in 1998 to invest 128 billion yuan in renovating power grids in urban areas.

In the past three years, renovation of power grids in 270 cities across the country have been listed as key infrastructure construction projects.
