West Lake Expo 2000 Opens in Hangzhou

The West Lake Expo 2000, an exposition with a 71-year history, opened in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province Friday evening.

Vice Premier Qian Qichen announced the opening of the exposition and Chai Songyue, governor of Zhejiang Province, extended his warm welcome to some 60,000 guests from home and abroad when addressing the occasion.

The 22-day exposition consists of 23 exhibitions, seven workshops and nine programs including tourism, culture, art and sports, according to the organizing committee.

A similar exposition was held 71 years ago in this city, which is dubbed "oriental Geneva" because it is known for the beautiful West Lake.

The "West Lake Expo 1929," the first of its kind in China, exhibited some 147,600 varieties of products from all over the world, making it paralleled with then world renowned expositions such as "Chicago Expo 1893," "Paris Expo 1990" and "Philadelphia Expo 1927."
