The People's University of China opened an international news media seminar in Beijing on Friday attracting 60 domestic and overseas journalists and experts.

During the two-day seminar, the delegates are scheduled to discuss the history of news media in the past 100 years and the prospects of the industry in the coming new century.

In a key-note speech, Fang Hanqi, chairman of the Society of Chinese History of Journalism, said that in the past decades China has witnessed a surprising surge in news media.

The industry is becoming a pillar of the state's national economy, Fang said.

Statistics show that China has more than 2,000 newspapers, 16 newspaper groups, nearly 300 radio stations covering 90 percent of the Chinese population, 368 TV stations covering 1.1 billion

viewers, 27,300 domestic websites and 16.9 million web surfers.

The topics of the seminar include law and features of news dissemination, impact of globalization and informatization on the news media industry in the 21st century.
