Beijing Beef Exported to Mid-East, Europe

Beef produced in Beijing was only exported to Hong Kong several years ago, but now it has found markets in the Middle East and Europe, said quarantine officials.

The Chinese capital has exported 500,000 tons of beef a month since the beginning of this year but the amount is expected to rise to 100 tons by the year's end, although the world is gripped by fear of mad cow disease, the officials said.

Countries that import beef from Beijing include Israel, the Netherlands and other countries.

The officials attributed the rise to a much more stringent quarantine inspection system and favorable policies related to exports in recent years.

Beef processing enterprises have also seen an increase in competition and were helped by market surveyors who found that the taste of Chinese beef is tailored to the taste of people in some Middle Eastern countries.
