Top Chinese Legislator Meets Russian Parliament Leader

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with Vladimir Platonov, vice-chairman of the Federation Council of Russia's Federal Assembly, and a delegation led by him Friday.

Li expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received during a visit to Russia last month, and said that he was happy to meet Platonov in Beijing again.

He said that the two countries share a border of more than 4,000 kilometers, and their peoples have a time-honored friendship, adding that China has always attached great importance to developing good, neighborly and mutually beneficial relations with Russia.

The two countries have had fruitful cooperation in the political, economic, trade, scientific and technological areas since the establishment of Sino-Russian partnership of strategic cooperation in 1996, in addition to good cooperation on international issues, he said.

Moreover, they have reached a consensus on a number of issues, including multi-polarity and economic globalization, he said, adding that Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Beijing Declaration during the latter's visit to China in July, signaling that Sino-Russian partnership of strategic cooperation has been developing steadily.

Li said that the Chinese NPC and the Russian parliament play important roles in their respective countries' political life, therefore, they can play a positive role in promoting Sino-Russian relations as a whole, adding that the Chinese NPC will continue to conduct exchanges with its Russian counterpart at various levels.

Li also briefed the Russian guests on the proposals approved by the Fifth Plenary Session of the 15th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005) and on the main topics of the forthcoming 18th meeting of the ninth NPC Standing Committee.

Platonov said that Chairman Li Peng's visit to Russia not long ago played an important role in advancing bilateral relations, adding that the Russian parliament will work to promote the further development of Sino-Russian relations.
