MNCs Enter IT Industry in China's West

Relevant materials show that at least 25 famous multinational companies (MNCs) have been involved, in different forms, in the electronic and IT industry in China's western regions.

Deputy director of the Information Industry Department of Sichuan Province in southwest China said that since China launched the strategy for the large-scale development of the western regions, Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Ningxia etc. have readjusted the industrial structure and given priority cultivation to the electronic and IT as a pillar industry in light of the actual condition of their local advantages of market resources and talent and the needs of long-term economic development.

According to the Office of the Western Forum Preparatory Committee, more than 20 world IT magnates, such as Microsoft, Intel, IBM and Motorola, will send their delegates to the Western Forum of China to seek opportunities for further investment cooperation.

Earlier, Siemens, Ericsson and other enterprises had invested in the manufacture of communication equipment in west China's major cities such as Chengdu and Chongqing. Along with the substantive steps taken in the west region development, these MNCs have begun to extend deep into the information industry.

Promoting the localization of software technology with local talent resources is an important investment strategy taken by transnational corporations to develop the IT industrial market in China's western regions. An official with the Management Committee of the Xi'an High and New Technology Industry Development Zone said that in the past year, IBM has established extensive cooperative relations with several key universities of Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an in the form of financial aid. Besides, it has invested more than US$20 million in building a large software development platform, providing a best stage for local technicians to develop software in a big way.
