Korea Calls the Shots in Shooting
Athletes from Korea (South Korea) have completely dominated the first day of the shooting competition at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, winning double gold and setting World and Paralympic records.
The first gold medal went to Kim Im-Youn, who had an easy win in the Women's 10m Air Rifle Standing (SH1).
Kim, a wheelchair athlete who contracted polio at the age of four, broke the Paralympic record in the qualifying round but was disappointed to miss a world record.
However, Kim turned things around in the final, winning by seven points and managing to set new world and Paralympic records.
An emotional Sabine Brogle of Germany won the silver medal, classing it as her greatest success ever.
Only 2.4 points behind Brogle was Atlanta gold medallist, Deanna Coates of Great Britain, who had targeted the silver.
Former world record holder, Jonas Jacobsson, on 688.3 points, sneaked into the bronze medal position by one point after being tied with fourth-placed Miguel Orobitg after the qualifications.
