Hong Kong Govt. to Introduce Smart ID Card

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government plans to introduce a smart ID card to local residents in 2003 to replace the existing one.

Regina Ip, secretary for security, made the announcement at the briefing of the Legislative Council's Security Panel meeting on the 2000 Policy Address Thursday.

She said the Executive Council has decided the launch of the smart ID card project at its meeting on October 17.

The new smart ID card will have the capacity to support multiple applications, said Ip, adding that possible initial applications may include driving license, library card and digital certificate.

She noted that the smart ID card will enable the government to provide more efficient, better quality and value-added services to the community.

Further feasibility studies and consultations are required before any of these applications may be implemented, she added.
