Li Peng Meets Hong Kong Delegation

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met Thursday with a delegation of representatives from different sectors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).

The fundamental interests of the people of Hong Kong rely on long-term prosperity and stability, Li told the Hong Kong delegation, which is led by Chun Ying Leung, convener of the HK Executive Council.

In his talks, the top legislator reiterated the Chinese government's adherence to Hong Kong Basic Law, the principles of "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy, adding that the central government supports the HKSAR government headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa.

Li praised Hong Kong people from different industries for their contribution to the prosperity and stability of the territory and their positive roles in handling local issues.

The visitors were informed on the Proposal on the 10th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development (2001-2005) adopted by the recent 5th Plenary Session of the 15th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The NPC leader also urged Hong Kong entrepreneurs to participate in the development of China's western areas.

The Hong Kong delegation is here at the invitation of the China Overseas Friendship Association.
