Experts say Hereditary Diseases Cause Dementia

The hereditary diseases are the main factors that lead to dementia in children, doctors from the Children's Hospital affiliated with the Chongqing University of Medical Sciences have discovered.

They said that the endocrinopathy of lying-in women, suffocation during the course of delivery, and social and cultural elements all can lead to the disease.

They drew the conclusion based on their examination and research on 764 children aged between four and 14, who are suspected to suffer from dementia, or mental reaardation.

They found that 35.2 percent of the children suffer from dementia caused by hereditary diseases, making up the biggest portion among the group of children.

A survey on children at the age of between 0 and 14 in China's eight provinces and cities shows that the incidence of the disease among urban children is 0.7 percent, and the rate for rural area is 1.41 percent.

Experts warned that it is necessary to avoid intermarriage, to learn more knowledge on heredity, health care and to improve psychological and cultural quality of the parents, to reduce the incidence of the disease.
