Symposium Held on Late US Journalist Edgar Snow

About 100 scholars gathered Wednesday to discuss the contribution to Sino-US relations made by Edgar Snow, late U.S. journalist and author of the famous book "Red Star over China."

Snow, considered as an "old friend" by the Chinese people, was the first foreign journalist to report the realities of the Communist Party of China and the Workers and Peasants Red Army. He met with Mao Zedong and other Chinese revolutionary leaders after arriving at the Red Army base in Bao'an of Shaanxi Province in 1936 and finally came up with the famous book, which caught world attention upon its publication.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Snow managed to visit China three times in spite of various difficulties and continued his mission as a journalist of introducing China. His efforts was cherished by China as a contribution to the establishment of friendship between the people of China and the United States.

This year witnesses the 30th anniversary of Snow's last visit to China, during which he was invited onto the Tian'anmen rostrum standing right beside Chairman Mao Zedong and watched the grand parade celebration of the National Day.

As part of the commemorating efforts, a painting and calligraphy exhibition sponsored by the China Society for People's Friendship Studies opened here this morning. The exhibition put on show more than 80 paintings and calligraphy works by people from all walks of life, who are appreciative of Snow's long-term efforts.
