Port City of Dalian Aims at Software Industry

Dalian, a port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, aims to become a model city with a large international software industry in China in the coming six or 10 years.

The sales volume of software in the port city reached 500 million yuan (60 million U.S. dollars) last year. The export volume of software hit 150 million yuan, one-third of the country's total.

Dalian is home to over 600 software businesses. It is embarking on a "Double-D" -- digital and DNA -- development path.

The local government promised to work out policies conducive to accomplishing that goal.

The sales volume from the software industry in Dalian is expected to be 5.7 billion yuan (686 million US dollars) by the year 2005, and 30 billion yuan (3.6 billion US dollars) in 2010.

There will be 60,000 people, or one out of every 100 local residents, engaged in software development by the 2010.
