Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met Tuesday with Queen Sirikit of the Kingdom of Thailand.

Li said that the fact that the Thai Queen, on behalf of the Thai King and people, is visiting China reflects the importance attached by the king and queen to Sino-Thai relations, adding that the visit will introduce a new chapter in bilateral relations.

He said that he was moved by the deep friendship of the Thai government and people toward the Chinese people each time he visited Thailand, adding that China highly values the long-term perspective taken by the Thai king and queen in developing the friendship.

China is also happy to see Thailand's economic growth, he added.

Li said that Sino-Thai relations have been developing smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, and cooperation in various fields has expanded.

In addition, China's NPC has had close contact with Thailand's parliament, Li said, adding that mutual respect and close cooperation between the two countries have set a good example for relations between the nations.

"I am fully convinced that through joint efforts, Sino-Thai all-round relations of cooperation will develop further in the new century," he said.

Sirikit said that it is her long-awaited aspiration to visit China, and during the visit, she saw the robust spirit of the ancient civilization with a developing economy and a happy people.

She said that Sino-Thai relations enjoy a solid foundation and accord with the shared interests of the people of the two countries, expressing the belief that bilateral relations will be even more stronger in the new century.
