3C Center Shifts From Taiwan to Chinese Mainland
The center to manufacture computers, communications and consumer electronic products (3C) has been shifted from Taiwan to the interior area of China and is to be based in Guangdong Province.
In an interview with reporters today, H.D. Yeh, general manager of Taiwan Primax Electronic Ltd, who is attending the on-going "3C Expo 2000" held in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, said that Taiwan enterprises making computer CPU, scanners, monitors and mouse have all moved their production bases to interior areas of the Chinese mainland, with Pearl River Delta as the center.
Yeh now runs eight businesses engaged in the production of computer components in Dongguan City and the products are supplied to computer multinationals such as IBM and Dell.
Pearl River Delta has grown into the biggest processing and exporting base of computer components in the world, with Dongguan as the core.
There are now 2,800 companies in Dongguan in 3C business. Last year, the city earned 6.68 billion U.S. dollars worth of exports.
In Shenzhen, more than 1,500 companies are processing complete sets of computers. Ninety-five percent of the components needed to process a computer can be found in Dongguan City alone.
An IBM executive said that when he came to Dongguan to do purchasing early this year, 70 percent of the world's computer market would be affected if the traffic from Dongguan to Hong Kong was congested.
At the 3C Expo 2000, which opened on October 13 and will close Wednesday, 70 percent of the participating manufacturers are Taiwan-funded businesses that process products from interior areas of the Chinese mainland.
Six purchasing delegations formed by computer companies of Taiwan attended the fair along with business people from over 20 countries and regions, placing orders for computer components.
