Sino-UK Seminar on Sustainable Development, Energy

The Sino-UK seminar on sustainable development and energy was held Tuesday in Beijing. During the one-day gathering, participants from governmental and academic organizations as well as enterprises discussed energy policies of the two countries, effective energy use in urbanization and industrial energy saving.

John Prescott, British Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and Regions, said on the occasion that environmental protection is an international issue, therefore, the exchange of experience in the areas of energy and sustainable development is of importance to the growth of both countries.

He also praised China's efforts in the development and use of renewable energy.

Vice Minister Liu Jiang of China's State Development Planning Commission said that China, as a large developing country, must take the path of sustainable development towards modernization. He also said that it is the Chinese government's strategy and basic national policy to ensure energy supply and seek harmony between energy and economic growth and environmental protection.

He said he hopes that the gathering will help promote exchange in energy efficiency in the course of urbanization.

Experts say that there will be an increasing demand for energy, especially clean energy, and at the same time, China will face more environmental challenges.

They believe that improving energy efficiency will be conducive to China's sustainable development.

The energy consumption ratio to the gross domestic production was down 60 percent over the past two decades. The ratio of energy saving was 4.5 percent.

The seminar was held by the Energy Research Institute of the State Development Planning Commission and the British Embassy in China.
