Senior CPC Official Meets Participants in Sino-Vietnamese Youth Friendship Meeting

Li Ruihuan, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met Tuesday with participants in the ongoing Sino-Vietnamese Youth Friendship Meeting.

Li, who is also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), extended a warm welcome to the Vietnamese delegation, headed by Vu Trong Kim, first secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and chairman of the National Committee of Youth of Vietnam.

Li said the friendship between China and Vietnam was cultivated by Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh and other leaders of the older generation of both countries, and since the forging of diplomatic ties 50 years ago, good-neighborliness have constituted the main trend in bilateral ties.

Especially in recent years, when high-level contacts between the two Parties and the two countries have been frequent, people-to-people communications have been regular and economic and trade cooperation have gradually deepened, he said.

Li outlined the guidelines jointly set forth last year by CPC Central Committee General Secretary Jiang Zemin and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Le Kha Phieu on the development of bilateral relations, which is to build long-term, stable, future-oriented, good-neighborly and overall cooperative relations. Such a guideline has laid down the framework for bilateral ties in the new century and lifted the traditional friendship to a new stage, he added.

China and Vietnam, two close neighbors, are both developing countries faced with the common task of developing the economy and improving living standards, he said, adding they both stick to socialism and are marching along the developing courses chosen in accordance with their respective realities. They should respect, support, and learn from each other, since it is beneficial to the people of both countries and the whole world, he said.

Li pointed out that the youth is a major force in society in every country, since they represent the future and the hope of a country. He encouraged the youth of both countries to inherit traditions while mastering new knowledge in order to contribute more to society.

The heavy task of developing the friendship between China and Vietnam will finally fall on the shoulders of the youth, Li said, expressing the hope that young people of both countries will reinforce cooperation to jointly carry on the traditional friendship into the next century.

Vu said the warm hospitality the delegation received upon its arrival fully demonstrated the deep traditional friendship between the two countries, which was cultivated by leaders of the older generation. The youth of both Vietnam and China should fully inherit such a friendship and further improve it together, he said.

At this trans-centennial moment, both countries shoulder heavy responsibilities, Vu said, adding that the young people of both countries should learn from each other so as to jointly face up to challenges in the new century.
