Chinese Defense Minister meets New Zealand Guest

Defense Minister Chi Haotian said Tuesday that China's development and prosperity constitutes no threat to any country.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Carey Adamson, chief of defense force of new Zealand.

Chi, who is also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, retrospected his visit to New Zealand in 1998.

The Chinese government and armed forces attach great importance to developing the friendly and cooperative relations with New Zealand, said Chi, adding that the bilateral relations have been developing smoothly in recent years.

Developing the friendly cooperative relations between China and New Zealand is of vital significance to the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, he said.

He noted that with efforts from both sides the friendly relations between the two countries and their armed forces will surely develop further.

He stressed that China's development will only serve to promote the peace, stability, and development of the world.

In the one-hour meeting, Chi also briefed the guests on China's military construction.

Adamson said that the military relations between the two countries have been consolidated in recent years.

New Zealand is satisfied with the development of military relations between the two countries, he said, adding that he hopes the two sides will join hands to maintain the peace and stability in the region.
