Concrete Pouring at Three Gorges Dam ResumesConcrete pouring at the Three Gorges Dam on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, has fully resumed after being suspended due to a major accident early last month.A conveyer belt machine collapsed on September 3, killing three workers and leaving 31 others injured. Concrete pouring at the dam construction site was instantly called off for investigations into the accident and repairing three other conveyer belt machines and two roof belt machines. China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Corporation has made efforts to resume production at the dam construction site while carrying out investigations into the accident. With the participation of Chinese technical workers, technical workers from French and Japanese companies, suppliers of the two roof belt machines, and technical representatives from Rotec Co., the American supplier of the conveyer belt machines, overhaul of the machines, has completed and they have been put back into service. While urging Rotec Co. to fix the problems found in all four conveyer belt machines, China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Corporation has called on the organizations that have been doing the concrete pouring to supervise the operation of the conveyer belt machines and to teach workers about repair and safe operation of the machines. Located in Central China's Hubei Province, the Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydroelectric project and is scheduled for completion in 2009. It is designed to facilitate flood prevention, electricity generation, transportation and water supply. |
