International Trade Center Being Built in Xinjiang

Development of an international commercial and trade center covering 260,000 square meters commenced recently in Kashi Prefecture, in the southern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The project, costing 840 million yuan and funded by a Hong Kong company, comprises of a customs district, a wholesale market, an exhibition center and a recreational zone.

Currently, Kashi Prefecture has four ports of entry. It is adjacent to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The project is expected to be completed in May 2001, which will turn Kashi into a commodity distribution center in the region and will promote border trade in western China.
