Nanjing to Host World Technopolis Association Meeting

The World Technopolis Association (WTA) Conference 2000 will be held from October 18 to 20 in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.

A high-tech achievements exposition will be held simultaneously, said Xu Huiling, vice-mayor of Nanjing and vice-director of the meeting's organization committee.

More than 8,000 technological achievements from 28 national-level and 59 city-level delegations, 677 high-tech enterprises, research institutes, colleges, and investment institutions will be present, Xu said.

It is expected that 270 agreements will be signed during the event, she said.

UNESCO officials and foreign diplomats are invited to the meeting.

Xu added that a technological innovation report will be made, a forum for mayors will be held, and more than 10 special topics on new economic and E-commerce, high-tech industry and risk investment will be discussed.

China's Ministry of Science and Technology and the Jiangsu provincial government will jointly sponsor the meeting.

WTA was set up in 1997 as a multilateral cooperative international organization. The main goals of the WTA are promoting regional development and a shared prosperity through exchanges and cooperation among science cities and contributing further to the happiness and well-being of all peoples through the advancement of science and technology.

Twenty-seven cities from 12 countries are members of WTA. The cities include Austin of the United States, Brisbane of Australia, Calgary of Canada, Nanjing of China, Taejon of Republic of Korea, and Gifu of Japan.
