China Unicom to Adopt CDMA Standard by Yearend: Qualcomm CEOIrwin Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm (USA), expects that China Unicom, the mainland¡¯s No. 2 telecom carrier, will choose Qualcomm¡¯s code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless technical standard for its mobile phone network by the end of 2000.Speaking on Oct. 12, Jacobs said that he met with high-ranking Chinese officials on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 to promote China Unicom¡¯s switch from the European global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard to the CDMA standard, CCIDnet.com reported on Oct. 13. The American company develops, delivers and enables innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on Qualcomm¡¯s digital technologies, such as CDMA, and has been negotiating the deal with China Unicom for some time, the article said. Jacobs noted that China Unicom was making important progress in the establishment of the CDMA network and that some Chinese manufacturers were prepared to provide some of the equipment and the infrastructure. He revealed that Qualcomm would not supply commodities to China Unicom directly, but would cooperate with the carrier¡¯s local branches. Jacobs refused, however, to disclose how much Qualcomm sales in China might rise as a result of such a decision, but said that if everything went smoothly, sales would increase substantially in 2001 and 2002.
