Recreational Arcades Shrunk by One-Third in East China City
The number of recreational arcades in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province, has shrunk by one-third, as a result of a three-month nationwide operation against prostitution, gambling and drug abuse in recreational places.
According to authoritative sources, local police have closed down some 1,300 recreational arcades which had been running without licenses and ordered 769 recreational places to make marked improvements within a limited time.
The police also executed eleven city-wide blitzes and handled some 1,426 criminal suspects.
The campaign, monitored by the ministries of public security, supervision and culture, and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, aims to "adjust the general nature of China's recreational industry, reduce the total number of recreational arcades, and curb the occurrences of illicit activities in recreational businesses."
Places that have been most closely monitored in the crackdown include dance halls, saunas and public bathing places, video arcades, beauty salons, tea-houses, bars, Internet cafes and hotels.
