Legislature to Deliberate Revised Marriage LawThe upcoming 18th meeting of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee is scheduled to consider a draft of the heatedly-disputed Marriage Law amendments.The meeting of chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee decided Monday to submit the draft amendments to the committee, who will convene on October 23. According to the latest nationwide survey conducted by the All-China Women's Federation, Chinese people are greatly concerned about bigamy, extramarital sex and sexual discrimination, with 91.6 percent of the surveyed approving revision of the existing Marriage Law. The Marriage Law, which was adopted in 1950, stipulates monogamy, freedom to marry and equity between men and women. The NPC revised the law for the first time in 1980, adding some new articles including the family planning. |
