People's University Marks 50th Anniversary

A celebration was held on 15th tomark the 50th founding anniversary of the People's University of China, the first university set up since the People's Republic of China was founded. 

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), gave a speech at the celebration on behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, the NPC and the State Council. Vice-Premier Li Lanqing sent aletter of congratulation to the university. 

Li Peng said that the progress of the People's University in the past 50 years has been closely linked with the development of New China and has contributed to promoting national strength and prosperity. 

Li Peng noted that the People's University insisted on down-to-earth tradition and socialist direction, and met the CPC's expectations with providing outstanding education and achieving high research levels in social sciences. 

The People's University of China is one of the foremost universities in China, focusing on social sciences, humanities, economics and business management. 

Its predecessor, the Public School of Shanbei, was established in 1937. The People's University of China was officially established in 1950 based on North China University.
