China Uses Dutch Technology to Harness Saline-Alkaline Soil

China has started a soil improvement project using Dutch technology in east China's Shandong Province.

This year, 667 hectares of saline-alkaline soil will be harnessed in the Yellow River Delta in the coastal province. In the following years 2,000 hectares of such soil will be harnessed annually.

The city of Dongying, where China's second-largest oilfield Shengli is located, and the Netherlands recently concluded an agreement on the implementation of the project. Dongying is in the heart of the delta.

Engineers will bury PVC seeping pipes 1.8-2.5 meters under the earth, which can absorb salt water and divert the water to drainage pipes.

The Yellow River Delta, with a space of 787,000 hectares, is a place with vast agriculture potential.
