Vice-Premier Encourages Development of High-tech Industries

Great efforts should be made to develop high-tech industries and further enhance technical innovations in the face of rapid high-tech advancement and economic globalization, according to Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo.

Wu made the remarks during his October 12-14 inspection tour in Shenzhen after attending the second Chinese high-tech fair in the city.

Wu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), stressed that it is imperative to earnestly study and thoroughly carry out the guidelines of the Fifth Plenum of the 15th CPC Central Committee, seize new historical opportunities, develop high-tech industries and achieve the development of productive forces in big strides.

Wu visited the Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Zone and several high-tech companies in the city during his inspection tour. He also spoke highly of the achievements Shenzhen has made in the reform and opening up, modernization construction and high-tech development.

Wu stressed that "We should seize opportunities and lose not time to carry out the strategic adjustment of economic structure, reform and optimize industries." He also cited the important role of high-tech in reforming traditional industries and improving competitiveness on the international market.

He pointed out that currently, priorities should be given to seven sectors, which include developing a group of competitive high-tech enterprises, technical reform and upgrading of traditional industries, absorbing foreign funds into the reform of state enterprises and encouraging Chinese enterprises to set up factories in foreign countries.
