Foreign Trade Expected to Exceed US$400 Billion in China
Hu Chusheng, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation, said at the news briefing of the 88th China Export Commodities Trade Fair held on October 14 that China's imports and exports had reportedly reached US$345.4 billion from January to September this year, up 35.7 percent over the same period last year. It is estimated that the volume of imports and exports is expected to exceed US$400 billion in the whole year.
According to the statistics provided by the General Administration of Customs, the export volume of the first nine months this year reached US$182.3 billion, up 33.1 percent over the same period last year; imports hit US$163.1 billion, up 38.7 percent. In 1999, China's import and export volume was US$360.6 billion, an increase of 6 percentage points over 1998. The increase rate this year is likely to be a two-digit figure.
