Asia Crime Prevention Foundation Issues Beijing Declaration

The Asia Crime Prevention Foundation concluded its 8th International Conference Sunday in Beijing and adopted a "Beijing Declaration on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice" calling for intensified international cooperation in crime fighting.

Han Zhubin, procurator-general of China's Supreme People's Procuratorate, said at the closing ceremony that the convention will promote cooperation and exchange between Asia-Pacific countries and regions in crime prevention and will contribute to the stability and prosperity of the region.

He said that China is willing to collaborate with the world in judicial assistance and training of personnel to combat crime more effectively.

More than 750 judges, prosecutors, police officers, lawyers and scholars from 69 countries and regions attended the conference.

The Beijing Declaration, endorsed this afternoon, asks the governments of the countries to ensure that illegal trafficking in women and children, smuggling of firearms, increasing drug menace, corruption and money laundering are prohibited by criminal laws.

It also asks governments to "ensure that the major forms of computer related harms are prohibited by criminal laws." The ACPF shall work towards devising new methods of combating computer-related crimes and reforming criminal justice systems to make them more responsive to "high-tech" criminals.

In addition, the Declaration deals with roles of prosecutors in the changing world, ways of enhancing the rehabilitation function of correction and the role of criminal justice in alleviating extreme poverty.
