Construction of Xi'an Museum BeginsA foundation stone laying ceremony has been held recently, marking the beginning of the construction of the Xi'an Museum in this capital city of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.One of the most famous capitals of the world ancient civilizations, Xi'an was once the largest city in the world whose population exceeding 1 million more than 1,000 years ago. For as long as some 1,100 years, Xi'an had been the capital of 12 ancient Chinese dynasties. According to the official source, the new museum will house more than 120,000 pieces of cultural relics, among which more than 10,000 are under top state protection. The new museum, expected to be completed in the year 2002, will occupy a land area of 16 hectares and cost about 156 million yuan (19 million US dollars).
