Economic Professor Appointed Head of People's University

Ji Baocheng, an economics professor, was appointed to be the new president of People's University of China, one of China's major universities in academic research.

The decision was recently made by the State Council.

Professor Ji, 56, was born in Yangzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province. Graduated from Beijing Institute of Commerce in 1966, Ji Baocheng obtained his M.A. degree from the People's University of China in 1981.

Ji is one of the pioneering Chinese scholars engaged in studies on marketing and modern commercial education.

Ji once was the vice-dean and dean of the People's University of China, head of the education departments of former Ministry of Commerce and former Ministry of Internal Trade.

He has also been in charge of higher education and development planning in the Ministry of Education.

Ji is a member of the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council and an adjunct professor of several universities including Beijing University.

The People's University of China is one of the foremost universities in China, focusing on the social sciences, humanities,economics, and business management.

Its predecessor, the Public School of Shanbei (northern Shaanxi Province in northwest China), was established in 1937. The People's University of China was officially established in 1950 based at North China University.

By 1999, the university community had more than 3,400 staff members, including 290 professors, 566 associate professors, 527 lecturers, 149 advisers to Ph.D., 400 advisers to master degree, and 15 members of the Scientific Field Evaluation Group and the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council.
