Britain, China to Strengthen High-tech Cooperation

Britain and China will continue to strengthen cooperation in high-tech fields in the 21st century, said Friday John Prescott, deputy prime minister of Great Britain, at a high-tech forum held in Shenzhen, south China.

With a long history of science and technology, China has made essential contributions to human civilization, said Prescott at a forum titled Britain -- Your High-Tech Partner, held on the Second Chinese High-Tech Fair.

He said that China has achieved great progress in the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) and management of science and technology, adding that it is necessary for Britain to engage in more exchanges with China and seek common development.

He said that the ongoing fair serves as a unique window for foreigners to learn about the investment climate in China, which provides sound opportunities for British businesses to invest in China's high-tech industries, such as computers, telecommunications, and new materials.

Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, Britain has obtained significant achievements in industries and science and technology.

The president of China's top research body of natural sciences noted that it is becoming a must for countries around the world to strengthen high-tech cooperation in the age of the knowledge economy.

Lu said that he expects the research institutes and sci-tech businesses from Britain to establish ties with their Chinese counterparts for the sake of pushing forward the development of science, technology and economy of the two countries.
