Israel Agrees to Stop Opening Fire: Palestinian Official

Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Sha'ath said Saturday that Israel had agreed to stop opening fire at Palestinians and ease the closure on Palestinian territories.

Sha'ath said that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat then agreed to attend the summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in Egypt. Sha'ath said Arafat made the decision after talks with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Anan, French President Jacques Chirac and senior European officials.

He added that Arafat's approval to attend the summit was based on Israel's commitment to ceasefire, opening the safe passages and a crossing for medicines and the basic needs.

On the time and venue of holding the summit, the Palestinian minister said it will most likely be held in Sharm el Sheikh on Monday, adding that Arafat will leave for Cairo on sunday to meet Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Barak also agreed on saturday morning to attend the summit.
