Barak, Arafat Agree to Attend Mideast Summit

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat have agreed to attend the Mideast summit, most probably on Monday.

Arafat and Barak Saturday morning called U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in tandem and told him about their acceptances to attend the summit probably to be held in Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm el Sheikh within 48 hours, the promised land for a Palestinian-Israeli deal last year.

Annan, who is now in the region on a mediation mission to defuse the mounting tensions between the Palestinians and Israel, has departed for Egypt for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
