Chinese Universities Join Hands to Form Sci-Tech Center

Some of the most prestigious universities in China Friday signed a contract to join Dongguan, the world's largest producer of computer accessories, in building a sci-tech (science and technology) town.

There are already 20 universities, including Beijing University, Qinghua University, Wuhan University, and the National Defense Science and Technology University, that have promised to support construction of the sci-tech town with their latest scientific research achievements and talents.

Dongguan, a neighboring city to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is currently hosting an international computer products exposition,3C Expo 2000 -- Computer, Communications and Consumer Electronic Products.

It is a home to over 2,800 businesses engaged in information technology products. However, few of the businesses have their own research and development (R&D) department.

Dongguan plans to build a sci-tech town with famous Chinese universities involved. The first phase of investment was 2 billion yuan (241 million U.S. dollars).

The sci-tech town is designed to become a innovation base for the R&D of high-tech products, technological training, and the transfer of scientific and technological achievements.
