Chinese Universities Join Hands to Form Sci-Tech CenterSome of the most prestigious universities in China Friday signed a contract to join Dongguan, the world's largest producer of computer accessories, in building a sci-tech (science and technology) town.��There are already 20 universities, including Beijing University, Qinghua University, Wuhan University, and the National Defense Science and Technology University, that have promised to support construction of the sci-tech town with their latest scientific research achievements and talents.�� Dongguan, a neighboring city to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is currently hosting an international computer products exposition,3C Expo 2000 -- Computer, Communications and Consumer Electronic Products.�� It is a home to over 2,800 businesses engaged in information technology products. However, few of the businesses have their own research and development (R&D) department.�� Dongguan plans to build a sci-tech town with famous Chinese universities involved. The first phase of investment was 2 billion yuan (241 million U.S. dollars).�� The sci-tech town is designed to become a innovation base for the R&D of high-tech products, technological training, and the transfer of scientific and technological achievements.
