Tibet's Animal Husbandry Develops Rapidly

The animal husbandry in Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China, has developed rapidly since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, said an official with the regional government.

The official said that at present, the annual output of meat and milk in Tibet has reached 146,000 tons and 28,700 tons annually. The two figures were respectively more than three and two times that before the introduction of reform and opening up policy.

One of China's five major pasturing areas, Tibet has a grassland of 80 million hectares, or 69 percent of its total land space and one-fifth of the country's total grassland.

To help develop Tibet's animal husbandry, the State has invested a lot in building a series of major projects in the region, such as meat and food processing projects, diary produce plants and pilot projects in developing local animal husbandry.

The state has helped the region set up 29 animal husbandry produce bases and other infrastructure facilities over the past years.

With the help of the central government and the rest of China, Tibet has formed a team of more than 1,700 people to develop and publicize animal husbandry technologies in the region.

At present, the region has over 23 million heads of livestock. The region now produces enough animal husbandry products for local people, and some for export.
