Lucent Launches a 10-gigabit Optical Network in China

Lucent Technologies on Friday announced that it has turned up service on a 10-gigabit optical network for China's Beijing Telecommunications Administration (BTA), one of the biggest subsidiaries of China Telecom.

The announcement was made at a ceremony to celebrate the launch of the first phase of BTA's Year 2000 Network Expansion Project. Lucent was awarded the first phase of the project under a US$15 million contract signed earlier in the year.

BTA said its transmission capacity will be increased with the new 10 giga-bit optical network and more services will be provided to local customers.

``This is a major milestone for our 10G networking portfolio and further demonstrates Lucent's leadership in China's optical and fiber cable industry,'' said Jeong Kim, president of Lucent Optical Networking Group.

``We are excited about our relationships with BTA and look forward to continued success with this customer,'' he said.

On September 7, Lucent and BTA signed a US$10 million contract for the second phase of BTA's 2000 Network Expansion project. Delivery of equipment for the second phase of the project began at the end of September.
