China, Belgium Seek Cure for Terra-cotta WarriorsChinese and Belgian scientists are working together to cure some mildewed terra-cotta warriors. The Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors in Xi'an, capital city of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, signed an agreement with Belgium's Janssen Pharmaceutical Co.,Ltd to work on anti-mildew drugs.Scientists said they expect a breakthrough in three years. Ranked "the eighth wonder of the world," the army vault warriors in Xi'an have reportedly suffered erosion from 40 different species of mildew since 1979 when they were opened to tourists. Scientists have found convenient and effective way of getting rid of 90 percent of the mildew, but the other 10 percent still remain. Experts said that the mildew is caused by many factors, including suitable temperature, humidity and acidity of the air and soil. Moreover, they said, the visit by more than 20 million tourists a year also helps accelerate the spread of mildew. |
