Non-Communist Parties Invited to Discuss CPC's Proposal on Five-Year Plan

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) hosted a meeting to seek opinions from non-communist parties and non-party affiliated figures on its proposal on the 10th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development (2001-2005).

CPC General Secretary Jiang Zemin presided over the meeting, which was also attended by three other members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan and Hu Jintao.

In his address to the meeting, Jiang urged the non-communist parties and people to frankly air their opinions and suggestions for the proposal.

"It is an important experience for us to ensure the correctness of our decision-making by bringing democracy into full play and make sure that the decision is scientific," Jiang said.

The Party leader said the next five to 10 years will be a very important period for China's economic and social development and stressed that the 10th Five-Year Plan will be the first in the country's "well-off" period.

During these years, the ongoing reform and opening drive will enter a new stage, as a socialist market economy will have taken shape, he noted.

Many participants from the non-communist parties expressed their appreciation and support for CPC's proposal and also offered their suggestions for the 10th Five-Year Plan.
