China to Focus on Developing Mining Industry in Western Region

China plans to move the focus of its mining industry to the western part of the country step by step, said Vice-Minister of Land Resources Shou Jiahua said Friday at an international conference held in Urumqi.

The ministry is working on policies and measures to guide enterprises that are interested in exploring mineral resources in west China.

The official made the remarks at the Round Table Conference on Western Development and Investment in China which opened today in this capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The western areas, rich in mineral resources, hold great potential for building the sector into a pillar industry for the region, the official said.

According to official statistics, 123 types of mineral resources have been discovered in the underdeveloped western region. The reserves of over 20 minerals in the region account for 50 percent or more of the country's total.

The ministry will allocate 60 percent of its funds for prospecting to the work in the west, the official said.
